You got Zombies in my Porn!
A while ago, I had wondered about the intersection of the zombie meme with the porn industry. Now I know what happens.

And for what it's worth, that comic (Girls with Slingshots) is fabulous, and worth an archive trawl.

This is a video which justifies YouTube's existence - Bela Fleck & the Flecktones doing a live version of "Big Country." Wow.

A weird place to draw a line (may not be safe for work)
According to this slashdot story, a 1976 Scorpions album cover (don't worry, that doesn't include the image) has been judged to be child pornography, and wikipedia is now being filtered by ISPs there for displaying the cover of an album which is available for sale. Warning: the album may be for sale, but that's no reason to think that it would be good.

No word yet on either Nirvana's Nevermind, or on Blind Faith's eponymous album, or on Roger Waters' The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. (these links contain the album cover images)

Interesting that Wikipedia is taking the brunt of this, when Amazon offers the uncensored artwork for sale in its store.

It's even more interesting that this is hardly a timely issue - the album being filtered, Virgin Killer (yeah, that's classy), is older than a substantial number of my friends.

Of all of the possible lines in the sand, how exactly did they pick THIS one? How about a brighter line? For instance, "no nudity on items for sale except through restricted access" would be a much easier and saner description. Of course, works by Michelangelo and Leonardo would both fail this test, as would vast quantities of other classic artwork. I know of no standard which would successfully differentiate between the four album covers mentioned above and the assorted classical images of cherubs which adorn countless museums.

We ought to think this through a bit more.

Roundup of oddities
Here is an interesting visualization of Iceland's financial meltdown

And here is what is wrong with Sears customer service (h/ts Megan McArdle)

A fascinating collection of images on a blog (NSFW!) it was this post about Rorshach that first drew my attention.

My phone has been acting up: apparently there is a cell tower down in the area, and when I did the live chat with a tech support agent, I was told that there is no online system to see when it will recover. Booo, hiss...

EDIT: I almost forgot: Lucid Absinthe just got certification from the OU, and I confirmed that from the OU themselves. w00t!

The people have spoken
So now I will give you the answers for which you've been waiting:

24 Respondents: 14 Female, 7 Male, 3 "yes, please."

18 folks are married (including all of the men), 5 are single, and one is horny ("wish I was gettin it on").

All were straight except for three bisexual married women, and one person who was "other" (I thought the categories were pretty inclusive, so I have no idea what that would be...).

Of the 14 women, 11 remove pubic hair. Of the 7 men, one does.

10 Democrats, 6 Independents, 2 Republicans, 2 Libertarians, a Federalist (hi!), one Fascist, one "none of the above," and one "all of the above."

So now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

And I feel validated in my point that while pubic hair removal is common among women, it is very uncommon among straight men.

Private Information
Sarah and I were having a conversation about a large number of subjects, and somehow we ended up on the topic of genital grooming. We have widely different opinions about what common practices are in this area, and thus, it's time for yet another survey...

Finally! A survey that doesn't care about getting your vote!

Click Here to take survey - results will be posted after election day, because personal grooming is a matter of national importance and not nearly enough attention.

A new addition
No, not that.

Sarah conspired with our collective parents to get me an iPod for my birthday, and it just came. I remain entranced by the awesomeness which is apple design - even the box exudes "cool." So following the hostname convention here, it's become "Stormy" (our Mac is "Devvin," so you might be able to figure out the convention... hem mevein, yavin). W00t!

The best part will be being able to escape the crap which is radio in the DC area - 94.7, 101, and 88.5 compete for "passable," and 97.9 is good (and along with Wasserman and Lemberger, totally redeems Baltimore), but the signal is flaky in the places where I tend to drive.

An amusing pair
I did a bit of an archive trawl on Casey and Andy today, and among the umpteen zillion really good strips, two stood out right now:

how to get a job with DHS

And the other which got my attention is made a lot funnier by a tacky conversation I had with Sarah recently - we were talking about zombies, which are known to moan/shout for their favorite meal: "brains... brains..."

tacky background story behind the cut )
Anyway, this particular C&A "strip" (hehe) tells me that others have thought of this joke before...

My busy day off
I went to minyan at BJI this morning, which was nice - they're kind of slow, so I don't think I can chance it during the week. From there, I headed up to Los Angeles to go (on Dr.PG's recommendation) to The Getty Museum. I haven't seen traffic here which is any worse than the DC suburbs - it's heavy, and it's slow during "busy" hours (which is most of the time), but I was able to make decent time the entire way.

Anyway, the Getty is neat, in that the collections are almost secondary to the awesomeness which is the building. The exterior surface is mostly rough-faced Jerusalem stone, with ultra-modern metal and glass panel sections interspersed. The net effect is of an early midieval near-east castle being renovated by Bauhaus. It's clear that this isn't architectural wankery, though, because there are brilliant bits of insight: in the stone walls, the portions which denote walkable corridors are smooth-polished, which creates a subtle "follow me" sense.

The way the Getty is laid out is by country of origin and date, which is nice, because I got a better sense of the difference between the Italian, Dutch, and French artists. I didn't care for most of the French pieces they had on display - they had a busy-ness due to literally gilding lillies.

A couple of pieces really stood out to me (and of course there were no postcards or prints of these...) -

Guido Reni, "Joseph and the wife of Potiphar"

One thing I pulled from that was that some of the folks who have asserted that dark skin tone had universally negative connotations didn't look too closely at this. The wife of Potiphar has a skin tone normally associated with the Madonna or Venus, while Joseph has a much more authentically Semitic complexion. I also really love the richness of the textures of the fabrics shown - all four of the cloths are monochromatic, but their varying stiffness is instantly apparent. Also, notice Potiphar in the background? Nice touch.

One French artist I did like was Georges de la Tour. His The Musician's Brawl captivated me, but it's hard to precisely put my finger on why. The lemon juice to the eyes, perhaps? The two other musicians who look like they're about to pick the pockets of the fighters? I don't know - it might just be the relative realism of the people in question.

Gerard ter Borch's The Music Lesson was another image which caught my attention. She looks liek she's going to faint in all that, doesn't she? And that right wrist position looks pretty painful: good thing she's getting lessons. The dog sleeping on the chair made me think of Kacy.

It pains me to say that one of the most striking pictures was Godfried Schalcken's The Annunciation. He took some liberties with the subject, in that Gabriel appears without the traditional wings, but even more interesting to me is the connotation of their expressions - doesn't Mary look positively stricken? I mean, I guess if I were a young newlywed, and some amorphous creature appeared to me and told me that I was pregnant without having had sex, and that my child would be the focal point of a tremendous upheval, I might be a little overwhelmed too. Gabriel's expression manages to be both domineering and condescending - the upturned index finger could be pointing to God, or he could be poised to strike. Just a marvelous painting - this is one of the best liturgical paintings I've ever seen: I don't think I've ever seen Mary portrayed in such a human light before.

The last painting which really gripped me was Aert de Gelder's The Banquet of Ahasuerus. The tipped goblet still dripping, and Ahashverosh's drunken leaning to his counselor have "whatever I'm going to say, it's going to be a bad idea" written all over it - I imagine that that's the look on William S. Burroughs' face right before he decided to try shooting the apple off of his wife's head. I think that Aert really captured the grossness of the drunken story at the beginning of Esther. There is a cautionary tale here: I think some folks take ad lo yadda on Purim as an excuse to end up in a state similar to Ahashverosh here, and that's unfortunate.

The capstone of the time there, however, was seeing René Magritte's Delusions of Grandeur. Wow. I hadn't realized that Magritte did sculpture! His paintings are some of my favorites (specifically, The human Condition, although my brother has a print of The Treachery of Images on his wall. Awesome) I have long considered Magritte the greatest of the surrealists, because he is the one who (to me) is most succesful at conveying an arational sense of the world while still using a very representational style. This sculpture is no exception - there are several possible delusions there, and I think that he's really on to something powerful.

whew! I had a good time there - although I missed Sarah's perspective: I like sharing art with her. After I left there, I went to a place where I had another work of art: Jeff's Gourmet has what I have to consider the finest hamburger I have ever eaten. I had a double, and the only way it could have been better is if I had two mouths to eat more of it. Just phenomenal.

After there, I headed over to Golden Apple Comics, and I just about did a Randall (Clerks reference - if you haven't seen the movie, hit yourself in the forehead, and rent it already). Dude. I didn't know they MADE comic stores that big. The fourth Manhunter trade is mine at last (Big Planet kept selling out before I could get there...)

However, the real treat was that directly across the street is the famous Babeland (formerly "Toys in Babeland," which I think is a much better name). Wow. A comic shop and a sex shop on the same block? Throw in a kosher restaurant and a shul, and there'd be no reason to go anywhere else! Anyway, the staff are very friendly and helpful, and in addition to a couple of truly amusing items (for example, a rubber duck vibrator called "rub my duckie" - however, it doesn't float, which immediately rendered it far less cool. Another example is the cone - which, as you might expect is a vibrating cone, but it comes with helpful pictograms for use in the unlikely event of cluelessness), they have a good selection of cool toys, books, and "couple's games."

(super-duper-secret advice to young couples: sex toys are fun, and they're the gift that keeps on giving. The staff can make good recommendations. Don't worry, I won't let anyone know that you know...)

From Babeland, it was off to Beth Jacob of LA for minha and ma'ariv (yes, I found that transition amusing too), and then back to Santa Ana for the night.

The Unpleasant Profession of...
A couple of weeks ago, I was headed down to the Synagogue sisterhood wine tasting (I'd give it a B- - I would have liked more variety, but selecting an art gallery was cool, and even though most of the art was bad, having a quasi-religious function in a room with pictures of naked people on the wall is aces in my book), and I stumbled into a gallery on M street which was doing an opening of Dr. Seuss' artwork. Wow. I took Sarah there the following morning, and we spent some time looking around - the two which I really fell in love with were
Relaxed in Spite of It and Freebird.

If I had a couple thou to drop on artwork, "Freebird" would be on the dining room wall right now.

Another art thing I think is cool is something I saw at the DC Arts festival, but couldn't afford then (sigh, and not now either): from El Jefe Design, a promo poster for Wolfmother at the Black Cat (image on my server because El Jefe uses Flash, so I can't directly link...). That is the perfect hard rock poster, in my opinion: it combines over-the-top sexual elements with lupine/devil elements to make an awesomeness soufflé. The subtle bits, like the right-hand rock-fist and the left-hand-in-jerking-off position, only add to the overall effect. I wish El Jefe had a lower price option for us cheapskates - $100 for a poster is pretty steep.

And of course, there is this S*P comic, which is the answer to Identity Crisis and all of the other "Women in Refrigerators" issues in comicdom. I'd love to see something like that in my funnybooks.

I was particularly bothered by striking down Sue Dibney in the way that IC did - I wasn't a huge Elongated Man or Dibney's fan, but then I read James Robinson's Starman, and their depth in that series really captured me. I wasn't one of the people who thought that IC sucked - it was actually one of the books that got me back into comics - but it does seem like a hell of an abrupt and arbitrary end to a tremendously powerful background character. Blue Beetle got a better death - beaten and executed, but defiant to the end.

Hëåvÿ Metäl
Microsoft Windows takes a hellöva long time to encrypt/compress files - doing a compression on about a 10 gig chunk of a 1TB disk took more than 3 hours. Then in copying it to a directly attached external HD over gig-E, ftp wouldn't do better than about 5% utilization. No, I didn't tune the TCP on the server - I'm about to erase it, I don't feel like dorking around with window size...

Lame lame lame.

I thought about posting a screenshot, but then I remembered that I was to g-disk the whole thing (yeah, gdisking a TB is taking forever) and there was no way to capture the lameness in a screenshot without giving away some vendor or client information.

But here's the kicker of lame: on a quad-processor Xeon, only one of the processors gets used for the crypto. You might think that the SERVER version of windows would be actually optimized for multiprocessor operation, but you'd be wrong. All I really wanted was the equivalent of tar -cvf anyway...

And why, for the love of God, doesn't windows come with a better FTP client?

pant pant pant.

Anyway, I moved about 100kg of servers, probes, and crap from Älvsjö to Solna, and I'm just waiting for the erasure to finish before boxing the last of it. I really didn't want to come to the office tomorrow, but I don't know if I really want to wait for this frakking thing to finish...

In the meantime, here are some things of interest:

I totally want to get a copy of this book (NSFW!) - it's a bunch of mainstream comic artists (Ditko, Kirby, Kane, Shuster, Shultz, etc) forays into erotica or titillating pictures. Awesome. (h/t to the incomparable Mike Sterling). So it's not just Waller & Worley (SFW) or Jay Naylor (NQSFW) ...

===

Tightly Wound discusses something the current academic environment about which I've complained for a long time: the growing illiteracy of those who do graduate coursework in the humanities.

I could have some schadenfreude at the fact that the academics who use so many words to say so little are from Duke - every UMd alum's nemesis - but that joy pales before the realization that that's the cream of the fool crop.

===

this incident where hareidi men beat up a woman who wouldn't move to a segregated part of a bus in Israël reminds me of what I don't like about separate kiddushes for men and women. I think there is actually truth to the "slippery slope" argument, which is often used by conservatives who are resisting liberal initiatives, but could also be used by those who are resisting the fundamentalist initiatives.

It's hard to stand in the middle of the road: you get hit by people going both directions.

===

And to show a nice dissection of many of the common angry Athiest arguments, Code Monkey's got the ticket.

Hey, balance, right?

gr. Gdisk is 65% finished.

You say it's your birthday
It’s Sarah’s birthday today.

This year has been a learning experience for me as her husband, because I’ve observed her mental and spiritual health improve at the same time that her physical health took a nosedive. She’s still out of work on disability due to a severe, long-term case of Lyme’s disease, but her overall physical condition has been improving steadily. I think it’s fair to say that she’d rather that the progress were substantially faster, but it is what it is, and slow progress in the right direction beats the hell out of no progress.

I’m really lucky to be married to her: we have complimentary senses of humor, she challenges me intellectually, and she’s all kinds of hot too.

not quite safe for work )

But seriously,

One of the things I’ve realized – and this points out to me how lucky I am – is that Sarah and I are each other’s closest friends. This is inherently a very, very good thing: when I’m horked off about something, there’s no one to whom I’d rather kvetch; and conversely, there’s no one with whom I’d rather share successes, and of course, there’s no one else whose opinion matters anywhere near as much: if she tells me that I’m out of line, then I’m pretty damn quick to reevaluate what I’m doing.

I kind of wonder about those couples where they don’t give off the “best friend” vibe: I’ve seen some who basically seem to be leading parallel lives rather than actually sharing their experiences, and I’ve seen some who have raised non-communication and hiding affection to an art form, and that sure doesn’t look pleasant to me. A thing I’ve come to realize is that even though the two of us have known each other for more than a decade (!) we still don’t live inside each other’s heads, and so the little displays of affection matter all the more – what good is it if I feel affectionately if that feeling is neither spoken nor acted upon?

Maslow, in his hierarchy of needs, is almost certainly incorrect in the details – but he was on to something which is essentially true: “higher level” needs tend to become relevant after basic survival is assured. So basic survival needs are things like paying the mortgage &c, but the higher-level need is the connection with the other - the desire to be understood, and loved for what one is. But what do I mean by “what one is?” Do I mean the seething cauldron of random thoughts and symbols which underlie consciousness? No. Rather, I see “self” as an emergent phenomenon – built up out of those pieces of randomness which we choose to embrace and act upon. Was King David’s “self” defined by his lustful thoughts toward Bathsheba? No – his self was defined by his acting on those thoughts. It’s the actions which truly matter.

Sarah, by being expressive in her affection, builds the environment where we really can connect in a profound way. She shows me that “love” is best treated as a verb.

Yesterday, EZRJ hosted a civilization game. As always, I came in 2nd (2999), but this time Andrew won with 31xx. Elanit and Jesse came in third and fourth (neck and neck).

Observations from this: playing Babylon is a huge advantage, especially when newbies are playing Egypt and Assyria. Agriculture is key (still). The credit chart on the back of the rules is more generous than the ones on the cards themselves, and we should use that one. More things give credits toward Law in particular than I expected.

[info]shoshiboo really had her butt handed to her as Crete - that's a hard country under the best of circumstances, but in a crowded board it would have been even harder than usual.

Metalworking is the key to beating the barbarian hordes: having the barbarians remove first is a huge benefit.

We recorded basic tracks for American Cyborg, Chick Magnet, and I've Got a New Song in my Head yesterday - I think we've got workable takes of all three, so that's excellent. Next will come Storybook Romance, Zombies, and The Shopping Blues, and then we're on to overdubs. Hopefully we can finish laying down the basic tracks before passover: I'd like to be at the overdubbing stage by then...

For no apparent reason, whole wheat shmura matza is really, really hard to find. We're ordering it for the Seder, but the annoying part is that they only come in handmade 7-to-the-$21-box-where-4-of-them-are-broken quantities. Grr. I did have one owner of a kosher grocery store tell me that such a thing "could not exist" which is yet another in the long series of annoyances with the washington kosher establishment. I wanted to go with the place in Chicago instead of Brooklyn (just 'cause...), but they didn't return my email (and honestly, they've got their own domain name: is is really THAT hard to get an email address which matches it? sheesh).

Sigh. Wasn't there supposed to be a stereotype of Jews being good businessmen or something? Must not be the people I keep encountering...

words fail
yes, this is actually safe for work.

This combines swords, porno, and cluelessness in one of the tastier packages I've ever seen.

Now, I spent the night in jail on the accusation of threatening a person with a sword (that sucked - I was in there with a guy who was an accessory to felony dognapping, a person who had run the parking gate at the airport, and other losers [of which I was one at the time]), but the difference it that I didn't go charging somewhere with it as an actual weapon - I was in the process of packing up my apartment (I did own swords), and the landlady called the cops and said that I threatened her (which wasn't true). This is where I learned that "assault" = threatening, while "battery" = hitting. Thus, I was charged with aggravated assault

The police arrested me, and took my sword (which they actually ruined by storing it point-down next to a radiator for 6 months), but of course this was a "decline to prosecute" - it was the landlady's word against ours, and she was obviously lying. Annoyingly, we were in the process of moving, and I hadn't dissassembled my drum set yet. My ex had her brother come help her finish packing up, but neither of them knew how to dissassemble one, so they pretty much destroyed it - a small drum kit breaks down into "chunks" of drum and hardware pretty easily. But if you take the chunks apart, it'll never be right again... I was finding springs and washers for months, even after I had given up on the set.

And that's the last time before now that I had a drum set available to me on a convenient basis.

Anyway, I think the real lesson from the CNN story is this:

Don't watch porn at a volume such that the neighbors can hear it.

Sheesh.
